My Boyfriend Made Me Listen to Deathcore

On one of my recent blogs about country music, there was a comment about how due to my blog they were going to listen to my playlist and branch out their music taste. This comment got me thinking, my boyfriend and I have been together for a while now and we have always sort of differed in music taste. I listen to a bit of everything; pop, country, alternative, hip-hop, and rock. My boyfriend, on the other hand, listens to deathcore, and for as long as I can remember I have tried to avoid listening to his music, due to the fact I believed it would scare me.
We do though have a lot of intersecting tastes, for example; All Time Low, Falling In Reverse, Crown the Empire, Sleeping With Sirens, Mariana's Trench, A Day to Remember, ICE NINE KILLS, and so on. So for road trips and concert choices, we stick to our middle ground with the occasional me DJing in the car and slipping in some other genres to try and get him to diversity.
That brings us to today, where my boyfriend FINALLY gets to me to listen to DEATHCORE.
He provided 5 songs, all with music videos. I will attach the music videos below and underneath I will provide my full unfiltered first reaction as it comes, with some of my boyfriend's reactions to me as he is very proud of the choices he gave me. So enjoy my dive into the deathcore world.
1.) Three Bastards - Infant Annihilator
Matt's preface: "This is probably the best music video ever I have ever seen and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do"
My reaction as it plays: I can't understand a word they are saying.
God, I wish my cat stepped on the keyboard and ended this.
Did they just dab?
Was that an ass cheek?
Please Rachel (my cat) step on the freaking keyboard.
At least it looks like they are having fun.
My reaction after: I did not catch a single word they were trying to say if there were any actual ones being sung. Matt thinks this is our cat's theme song when she stares down our dog. I would not recommend.
2.) Slaughter to Prevail - DEMOLISHER
Disclaimer from Matt: Some of this is in Russian so if you don't understand it that may be why.
My reaction during: I'm scared.
How are people singing along?
The masks are pretty lit though. They have to be sweating their asses off in them though.
The actual music to this is far more enjoyable than the first one, definitely a lot of talent, still wish I knew what was being said though.
Killer drums.
The pre-breakdown although in Russian may have been my favorite part.
3.) Whitechapel - The Saw is the Law
This is a lyric video -- thank the lord.
This is named after where Jack the Ripper did his killing which is a fun fact for me as I am a serial killer documentary enthusiast so I am going in with higher hopes.
My reaction during: Of course the most understandable of them all is the one with the lyric video.
Pretty skilled harshes especially when he picked up the speed.
A question to Matt -- "Do they do ANY singing that aren't harshes?"
Answer -- "on their newest album, but not this song"
My face was not pleased....
I am again a fan of the drumming in this song.
4.) SHADOW OF INTENT - Malediction
Matt states that in his opinion, this song has more of an epic feel.
My reaction during: Digging the intro music
So far so good, I like.
Drums again killing it for me.
At 1:10 is where it lost me.
I enjoy that there is some parts that aren't total harshes that counterbalance and are actually understandable
The guitar riffs are sick *insert my annoyance as Matt corrects my lingo and spelling multiple times in this sentence*
This song is so far my favorite out of all of them, as the term I learned it is indeed a "filthy" song.
5.) Chelsea Grin - Eternal Nightmare
Matts comment: Malediction is going to stay your favorite song. You will not like Chelsea Grin....
Thanks for this one babe.
My reactions during: Pretty decent intro
I wish I could insert my facial reactions here...
That's pretty accurate actually.
When they aren't screaming, the musical talent is actually out of this world.
I still have 0 idea what is being said.
My final thoughts: This was an experience for sure, but I have to say that I will not be adding these songs to my playlist anytime soon. I am glad I decided to give this a try as my boyfriend was very excited for me to do this and I am sure he enjoyed my reactions.
Our cat on the other hand, seemed to like this music a little too much and I am scared for what my boyfriend has done to her as she curls up sleeping closer and closer to the scary music.
So what did you guys think? Will deathcore be in your playlist?
I think it's great that you branched out and tried something new! I envy that. I love 90s/00s R&B/Soul music and getting into contemporary artists in that genre is sometimes difficult for me because I love listening to the legends (Stevie, Mariah, Whitney, etc..) Listening to new music like trying new foods; you're apprehensive at first, but then after each new bite (or song) you adapt. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it, but at least you branched out! Great post!
